AML Training for the iGaming Sector
This course will be focused on the gaming sector and directed to new MLROs (including new MLRO designates), and new staff members within the AML function. The course will delve into the updated FIAU Implementing Procedures Part I as well as Part II which specifically relates to the remote gaming licensees. Particular topics will include the Risk-based approach (clarifying the concept and application of Business Risk Assessment and the Customer Risk Assessment), CDD, MLRO obligations, training and documentation. We will also treat the subject of Terrorist Financing, which typically tends to attract less attention but is nonetheless an obligation of subject persons. The course will also tackle red flags and typologies within the gaming sector ensuring that we tackle real issues faced by AML staff in this industry. The session will be interactive and will encourage discussion around the case studies and technical concepts.

Alex Azzopardi, Director, Advisory – Risk Consulting Advisory Services, KPMG Malta
Alex currently leads the firm’s provision of Internal Audit Services to a diversified portfolio of local and international clients. He is also involved in the provision of regulatory advisory services to a diverse client base. Alex has regularly provided technical training on subjects including financial reporting and regulations. Alex joined KPMG Malta in 2005 after successfully completing his Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) Degree at the University of Malta. Following a number of years working within the Audit function, he joined the Risk Consulting Advisory team in 2013. He is an accountant by profession, holds the Practising Certificate in Auditing and is also a Certified Information Systems Auditor. Alex is a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) and a member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). Through his career at KPMG Malta, Alex obtained extensive experience in auditing, risk consulting advisory and internal audit. He currently leads the firm’s provision of Internal Audit Services to a diversified portfolio of local and international clients. He is also involved in the provision of regulatory advisory services to a number of banking and insurance clients. Alex has regularly provided technical training on a number of subjects including financial reporting standards and regulation. He currently serves as Secretary to the Committee of the Malta Forum for Internal Auditors.
Deborah Cassar, Senior Manager, Advisory – Risk Consulting Advisory Services, KPMG Malta
Deborah is a Senior Manager in AML within the Risk Consulting Advisory Services team at KPMG in Malta. She joined the team and the firm in January 2019. Deborah graduated in Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Banking & Finance and Management, in 2006 from the University of Malta. She has over 10 years’ experience within the Financial Services sector at local and international banks. Before joining KPMG, Deborah worked for over 2 years with the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) within the Compliance department. She has extensive experience in carrying out Compliance on-site and off-site examinations with subject persons within the Financial Services sector, DNFBPs, Gaming sector and others; and advising and assisting subject persons to establishing appropriate AML/CFT internal structures and controls. In 2017 she has obtained an international golden standard specialisation with ACAMS as a recognised Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS). Deborah is also an active member with the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS). She has also obtained ICA qualifications in Anti-Money Laundering and Sanctions Compliance and in Regulatory and Financial Crime Compliance. At KPMG, Deborah works extensively in the areas of Anti-Money Laundering Compliance. She has managed AML projects locally and assisted entities in the financial services and gaming sectors to comply with regulatory obligations specifically on AML/CFT. These projects include assisting with the drafting and/or review of policies and procedures, training, review of processes, GAP analysis, Customer Risk Assessments and Business Risk Assessments.
