Course Description:
This course provides a focused overview of Intellectual Property (IP) specific to the online betting and gambling industry. Participants will explore how IP rights apply to software platforms, game designs, branding, algorithms, and user interfaces. The course also addresses regulatory considerations, licensing agreements, and strategies for protecting proprietary technologies and content in a highly competitive and regulated environment.
Target Audience:
This course is ideal for product managers and developers in betting and gaming companies, compliance and legal support teams, marketing and branding professionals in the gambling sector, entrepreneurs, and start-ups entering the online betting space.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to identify key IP assets in online betting and gambling platforms, understand how different categories of IP apply to digital gaming and betting content, navigate licensing and third-party content agreements, and recognise and mitigate IP infringement risks in the sector.
Prerequisites:
No legal background is required. Familiarity with online betting or gambling operations is beneficial but not essential.

Jonathan Tonna, Associate Director, IP Services, KPMG in Malta

Jonathan leads the IP Services function at KPMG in Malta and is the subject matter expert on Intellectual Property. Before joining KPMG, he spent over eight years in the IP legal services sector, working across the trademark, design, patent, and copyright fields. He also served for close to three years as a private consultant and IP lead at one of the largest operators in the gaming industry, where he was responsible for managing and enforcing the company’s IP portfolio and driving the implementation of IP strategy.
