Course Description:

The course is aimed at analysing the role of the Shipping industry within the Maltese economic context. Attendees will be given an understanding of the shipping industry within an International context by receiving basic knowledge of the main institutions involved in the development of the Law of the Seas. Focus will then shift towards the Maltese shipping industry in order to understand the manner how the Shipping Industry has positioned itself within the international context. For this reason we will analyse why ship owners and ship financiers have chosen Malta as the Flag of Choice and the reasons behind the positive and healthy numbers reached since its accession to the European Union with sessions also dedicated to the recently revamped tonnage tax rules in Malta and social security measures aimed at attracting further investment to Malta.

Target Audience:

The session is aimed for accounting / legal professionals, university students, people interested in shipping or any type of worker (clerks / engineers etc) within the industry.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course attendees will get an understanding of the Maltese Shipping Industry, its strongest selling points and the reasons why this has proven to be so successful.

Roderick Borg is an accountant by profession. He joined the tax function of KPMG after graduating with a first class degree in both the B. Com course and the B. Accty (Hons.) course from the University of Malta. In 2010, Mr Borg was awarded the diploma in taxation with distinction from the Malta Institute of Taxation. He is currently a Director involved in the provision of direct and indirect tax compliance and advisory services to domestic and international corporate and individual clients. He also delivers lectures in various seminars and professional educational activities relating to taxation matters including taxation modules to students reading for their ACCA qualification.

Partner, Camilleri Preziosi Advocates

Steve joined the firm Camilleri Preziosi Advocates as a trainee in 2007 and was admitted to partnership on 1 January 2018. Steve read law at the University of Malta graduating with an LL.D. in 2008 and subsequently obtained an LL.M. in Commercial Law in 2009 from the University of Edinburgh where he studied Banking and Finance, Debt and Insolvency Law, Company Law and EC Competition Law. He submitted his dissertation on the “Application of EC Competition Rules to Public Undertakings”. Steve is a partner and specialises in public procurement, maritime and aviation law. Steve advises entities on major ship and aviation finance transactions. Steve also advises government and private entities on major projects, including public procurement and state aid.

Senior Manager

Silvia is a senior manager within the tax department at KPMG Malta, assisting with Global Mobility services. Silvia graduated in 2009 after concluding her degree at the University of Turin (Italy). She is an Italian certified Lawyer. Silvia joined KPMG about 10 years ago, working at the Italian firm first and at the Malta firm thereafter. She has been working in the Global Mobility Industry since the very beginning. During her career, she has been assisting both local and international companies with matters relating to the mobility of personnel, including assistance with structuring assignment policies and coordination of global engagements. Her expertise covers international tax and social security matters and she has experience in servicing clients in various industries, including automotive, aviation, etc.. She assist both with advisory and compliance services. Silvia delivers trainings on global mobility matters, domestic and international tax and social security issues. She also contributes to the KPMG global mobility, assisting both the finance and the HR function.

Deputy Chief Officer

Ivan graduated as Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta and was later admitted to the bar. He then furthered his legal studies by reading for a Master’s Degree in International Maritime Law at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute. Currently Ivan occupies the position of Deputy Chief Officer within the Merchant Shipping Directorate of the Authority for Transport in Malta. His area of expertise is the human element and is the head of the Seafarer Department which deals with the training, certification and welfare of seafarers. He is also entrusted with various special projects that arise from time to time. Ivan represents the Maltese Administration in all seafarer matters.
Pauline is the Chief Executive Officer of Maritime MT, a one-stop-shop institution for seafarers and shore-based personnel, offering mentoring and training in compliance with the highest international standards and regulations governing the maritime industry. Pauline will focus on the day-to-day goals and challenges which motivate such a leading maritime training centre in Malta offering seafarers & shore based personnel the highest levels of tuition, training and development opportunities across the Merchant Navy Academy, Small Crafts Academy & Superyacht Academy.
