Course Description:

We are delighted to launch the IFRS Masterclass series. Our Academy invites you to experience IFRS CPE training in an interactive, insightful, and impactful way.

The IFRS Masterclass offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical insights, interactive workshops, practical exercises, and in-depth technical discussions. It is designed to address key challenges and complexities in the financial reporting landscape. Participants will gain both conceptual understanding and real-world application experience, thus enabling them to navigate evolving accounting standards with greater confidence and clarity.

The IFRS Masterclass will comprise of two sessions of 4.5 contact hours each (excluding breaks).

Target Audience:

These sessions are designed for Professional Accountants in Business, such as Financial Controllers and Group Accountants.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course participants will be able to understand and define the elements of the technical topics as disclosed in the agenda:

  • By participating in peer-to-peer discussions (with a deeper understanding of the standards and their practical application), engage in technical discussions with enhanced confidence
  • Apply the theoretical elements in a practical scenario that simulates real-world financial reporting challenges

Rosalene Caruana

Associate Director

Rosalene has been part of the Corporate Accounting Advisory Services department of KPMG for around 10 years. She immediately joined the team on a full time basis after obtaining her Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) degree at the University of Malta. Her tasks involve managing a team of advisors within the aforementioned department. Throughout the years, she has assisted clients with their book-keeping and financial statements preparation requirements under both the local default accounting framework (GAPSME) and IFRS as adopted by the EU. She has experience on accounting of various holding companies such as holding of property, plant and equipment, investment property, portfolio of investments, subsidiaries, associates and joint ventures, and other financial instruments such as available-for-sale assets, assets held for trading and loans and receivables under local GAAP and also financial instruments under IFRS 9. She also assisted with the preparation of the accounts of entities in different industries such as pharmaceutical, financial services (licensed entities) and trading entities (in particular retail and grain). She also had exposure to companies involved in affiliate marketing. She also specialises in the provision of accounting advice on various technical accounting matters such as the determination of distributable profits, common control transactions, classification and measurement of assets and liabilities and also accounting implications arising from the application of tax incentives such as the formation of fiscal units and the application of notional interest deduction. She also assists companies with changing their accounting framework from IFRS to GAPSME and vice versa, highlighting any implications arising from such changes. Throughout her work, Rosalene also assists with performing accounting health checks and audit readiness engagements which help clients in having all necessary information on file for their audits.

Senior Manager

Renzo joined KPMG’s Corporate Accounting Advisory Services function in 2018 upon completing his master’s degree in accountancy at the University of Malta. Renzo is mainly involved in advising a varied portfolio of local and international clients with their implementation of IFRS requirements. Renzo also delivers training on specific IFRS matters and local Companies Act requirements to his clients.
Sahana is the a member of the Corporate Accounting Advisory Services team here at KPMG, where she specialises in finance transformations projects and non-financial reporting. She has experience in assisting clients with accounting process optimizing, digital accounting manuals and building smart dashboard. She provides advice on financial and non-financial reporting matters to clients. This includes assisting management with all their reporting objectives, including reducing time taken for preparing financial statements, reduction in manual intervention/errors in reporting, adopting best data management practices, etc. She also advises clients on technical IFRS matters and on sustainability reporting.

Assistant Manager

Andreas forms part of the CAAS team at KPMG Malta, working on several IFRS areas. Most notably, Andreas forms part of the insurance team - providing accounting technical advice to local and international clients on the adoption of IFRS 17. He also assists clients with technical advice on various other IFRS and GAPSME standards, as well as the preparation of quarterly VAT Returns. Andreas graduated as a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting and Economics, and subsequently graduated as a Master in Accountancy in May 2023. His dissertation, in partial fulfilment for the award of the Master in Accountancy degree, related to ‘The Profitability of Maltese PLCs and the Covid-19 impact’. Andreas is also an established trainer at KPMG Learning Academy, delivering courses on several IFRS topics.
Aaron holds the role of an Advisor within the Corporate Accounting Advisory Services (CAAS) team in Malta, providing technical advice and assistance to clients in achieving compliance with accounting standards. Following a two-year period as a trainee with KPMG Malta, Aaron joined the AAS team on a full-time basis in July 2022, after completing the Master in Accountancy Degree at the University of Malta. He provides technical advice to clients operating in diverse industries. Aaron has also been involved in the preparation of financial statements for multiple clients across different industries such as tourism and hospitality, aviation, and gaming.
