Course Description:

This Module constitutes the Malta variant of Paper 2 of the Advanced Diploma in International Tax (1 out of 3 modules) and provides in-depth insights into the Maltese local and international tax landscape covering the taxation of individuals, companies and partnerships from an Income Tax, Income Tax on Capital Gains, Property Transfer Tax, Duty on Documents and Transfers and Value Added Tax perspective.

Target Audience:

This course is aimed at qualified professionals who wish to specialise in tax, including qualified accountants, lawyers and tax advisors.

Learning Outcomes:

This module will enable individuals to develop their knowledge on the main taxes of the Maltese tax system including Income Tax, Duty on Documents and Transfers and Value Added Tax as applicable to individuals, companies, corporate groups and others and develop the right skill set to be able to apply such knowledge in providing advice and guidance to individuals and businesses on the impact of the major taxes on financial decisions and transactions.

CPE Hours: This course qualifies for 66 hours of Structured CPE which can be classified as Core Competency. A certificate will be issued by the Chartered Institute of Tax upon completion of the course.

Roderick Borg is an accountant by profession. He joined the tax function of KPMG after graduating with a first class degree in both the B. Com course and the B. Accty (Hons.) course from the University of Malta. In 2010, Mr Borg was awarded the diploma in taxation with distinction from the Malta Institute of Taxation. He is currently a Director involved in the provision of direct and indirect tax compliance and advisory services to domestic and international corporate and individual clients. He also delivers lectures in various seminars and professional educational activities relating to taxation matters including taxation modules to students reading for their ACCA qualification.

Associate Director

Ruth joined KPMG in Malta in 2015 and is currently an Associate Director within the international tax advisory team. A warranted lawyer by profession, Ruth subsequently read her Advanced Masters in International Taxation at the International Tax Centre, University of Leiden. Over the years Ruth has been advising international clients on both domestic and international tax issues as well as corporate law matters, focusing on a number of key EU tax areas and helping clients hailing from different industries navigate the new international tax environment. Ruth also regularly delivers training both to clients and within various tax courses offered in Malta, including ACCA, ADIT and others.

Senior Manager

Thomas is a Senior Manager as part of the tax function of KPMG Malta, having joined during 2016 after completing the Master in Accountancy degree at the University of Malta. He also completed the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation which is awarded by the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Thomas’s role mainly focuses on domestic corporate tax and incentive legislation, whereby he is involved in the provision of tax compliance and tax advisory services to local and international corporate clients across various industries.

Senior Manager

Rebecca Vella is an accountant by profession, having joined KPMG in 2015 after reading a Masters in Accountancy at the University of Malta. She also successfully completed an Advanced Diploma in International Tax (CIOT) in 2018. Previously involved in the provision of domestic and international tax compliance and advisory services at KPMG, she is currently a Senior Manager in the Tax - Family Offices and Private Clients Services Team. Her work involves interaction with individuals and groups of companies based in Malta and outside of Malta with local presence, including also different types of entities, such as foundations and trusts, being involved in both the provision of advice, as well as assisting in the relocation to Malta, setting up and/ or reorganisation of group structures, including assisting individuals with annual tax compliance and ongoing relative advice. Her experience includes having worked at KPMG London for 3 months, during which period she formed part of the International Tax – Financial Services Team, working on different engagements, ranging from Tax Audits, MDR implementation, reorganisation and related advice, with clients being namely large banks based in the UK and internationally; and is also a visiting lecturer at the Malta Institute of Management, Malta Institute of Taxation and KPMG Learning Academy, amongst others.
Anna is a warranted accountant and graduated with a Masters in Accountancy from the University of Malta in 2018. In 2018 Anna joined KPMG Malta and is currently a Manager within the domestic tax advisory team. Anna is involved in the provision of tax compliance and tax advisory services to corporate clients across various industries. She is primarily involved in the provision of succession planning and group restructuring assistance.
Jade is a Manager in the tax function at KPMG in Malta. She joined KPMG in 2017 after graduating with a Masters in Accountancy from the University of Malta. In 2022, she successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation. Jade is part of the Income Tax Compliance and International Tax Advisory teams of KPMG, being particularly involved in the provision of direct tax Advisory services and compliance services to international and domestic corporate clients. Moreover, she has been involved in advising and providing assistance on various group restructurings including family businesses and advising corporate clients with various domestic and international tax matters.
Kieran Vassallo is a Manager within the tax function at KPMG Malta. Kieran graduated at the University of Malta with distinction, completing the Master in Accountancy course in 2020. Kieran holds a Diploma in VAT Compliance and is currently reading for an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT). In December 2021 he was awarded the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers Prize for placing first worldwide in ADIT Module 3 (thematic), having sat for the EU VAT exam. On a day-to-day basis, Kieran assists clients operating in a wide-range of industries with VAT and other tax matters.
Isabelle is a warranted accountant and graduated with a Masters in Accountancy from the University of Malta in 2017. In 2017 Isabelle joined KPMG Malta and is currently a Manager within the domestic and incentive legislation team. Isabelle is involved in the provision of tax compliance, succession planning and group restructuring advisory services to corporate clients across various industries.

Assistant Manager

Christopher is an accountant by profession, having graduated with a bachelor's degree in Accountancy and Economics from the University of Malta. He then pursued further studies and obtained a Master's degree in Accountancy. In 2020, Christopher joined KPMG Malta and is currently an Assistant Manager within the International Tax Advisory Team. In 2023, Christopher completed the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT), awarded by the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He assists clients in complying with income tax regulations and is also part of the international advisory team.

Assistant Manager

Maria joined KPMG on a full-time basis in July 2020, having obtained a Masters in Accountancy Degree with Distinction at the University of Malta. Maria assists clients in complying with income tax regulations and also forms part of the international advisory services team at KPMG, specialising on FATCA / CRS service offerings. This involves advising clients on the reporting obligations and compliance matters brought by the Automatic Exchange of Information laws introduced in Malta.

Assistant Manager

I am a certified public accountant and graduated with a Master in Accountancy from the University of Malta in 2020. I read the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation with the Chartered Institute of Taxation and obtained the Diploma in 2024. I joined KPMG Malta as a student and is currently an Assistant Manager within the Family Offices and Private Clients Services Team, being mainly involved in the provision of personal tax Advisory and Compliance services to individual clients.
