Course Description:

In a rapidly changing marketplace, the finance function has a key role to play in delivering efficiency, insight, and value to the business. The introduction of new technologies, increased volumes of data, regulatory changes and the need to deliver more for less adds to the pressure on CFOs and Finance Directors. Finance functions must pivot from transaction processing and reporting towards strategic business support to drive profitable growth, reduce costs, and assume a broader set of strategic responsibilities within the enterprise.
KPMG’s Finance Transformation team is a multidisciplinary team comprising of the Corporate Accounting Advisory, Digital Solutions and People & Change. The Finance Transformation team at KPMG Malta supports the full agenda of the CFO.

A Partner within the Advisory function, Jonathan leads both the Corporate Accounting Advisory Services team and the Learning Academy at KPMG in Malta. He has over 20 years of experience in the accountancy profession and over 14 years teaching experience. After obtaining his Bachelor of Accountancy Hons. degree (First Class honours) from the University of Malta, Jonathan joined the audit function of KPMG. Several years later he became the first technical officer of the Malta Institute of Accountants and eventually its first Technical Director. In 2012 he set up KPMG’s Accounting Advisory Team which he still leads. In his current role as IFRS specialist Jonathan assists and provides advice to many local and international clients on financial reporting matters to ensure they comply with the most complex requirements of IFRS. More recently, he took the lead of the firm’s training arm, the KPMG Learning Academy. He is responsible for the strategic direction of the academy and is also involved in the delivery of several financial reporting courses under the IFRS learning suites umbrella. He completed his PhD studies in 2021. He lectures on advanced financial reporting at the University of Malta is an elected member of the Council of the MIA.
Marlon is a Certified Public Accountant specialising in outsourced corporate accounting, corporate and indirect taxation, and finance function transformation services. Marlon joined KPMG in 2009 soon after completing his B.Accountancy (Hons) degree. During these years, Marlon has led teams in providing accounting services such as the preparation of management accounts and statutory financial statements under both GAPSME and IFRS accounting framework, VAT compliance and related services and assisting clients in setting up their accouting system and procedures, for a portfolio of clients, both local and foreign. His industry experience ranges from retail, international business, financial holding companies, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, government-owned entities, intellectual property development and shipping companies. He also leads a multi-disciplinary team of professionals in assisting organisations achieving their state-of-the-art finance function specifically with optimising and digitalising their finance processes and procedures.
Claudine is a Counselling Psychologist, Executive Coach and Registered Supervisor with a business and commercial orientation. Apart from teaching Psychology and Behavioural Leadership at the University of Malta, she has worked extensively in the area of transformational change and personality and leadership profiling with diverse nationalities in the UK and Malta. Claudine enhances top-leadership capacity and agility at moments of personal and organizational transitions and supports transformational change by catalyzing change agents and embedding behaviors and mind-sets in everyday work. She is passionate about supporting Leaders understand themselves better by building self insight and by taking a closer look at their leadership styles to help them and their teams thrive. She collaborates closely and builds strong rapport with clients, consultants and mentors to facilitate communication and enhance execution of developmental transitions. Her appreciation and interest in cultures and different customs have led to extensive travelling.

Associate Director

Georges provides IFRS and GAPSME advice and delivers accounting topic papers to his clients on complex technical accounting matters. He also assists clients in the preparation of separate and consolidated financial statements in accordance with IFRS or GAPSME, including groups operating in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, gaming, international business, construction, and financial services. His area of focus in these diverse industries includes IFRS consolidations and the implementation of recently issued IFRSs. Georges also implements Excel-based consolidation tools to large groups to improve their consolidation reporting process, with a focus on quality and complex accounting requirements and reducing reporting timeframes. He has also developed an IFRS 16 Leases tool to assist clients in transitioning to the new leases standard, with focus on automation and timely reporting. Georges delivers technical training and presentations on IFRS matters both internally to his colleagues and to his clients, and delivered lectures on the Financial Reporting and Strategic Business Reporting modules to students as part of their studies in fulfilment of the ACCA qualification.

Associate Director, ESG, KPMG

Rachel is a chemist and chartered environmentalist, having 16 years’ experience in sustainability. She joined KPMG in 2022 as Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) lead, after having worked in both the environmental consultancy and regulatory sectors. Throughout her career, Rachel has worked with Government entities and companies in various sectors, including in construction, waste management, energy, and manufacturing. Her specialisations include climate change, environmental permitting, reporting, and auditing, as well as air quality monitoring and impact assessment. Rachel is also a skilled trainer and communicator, having lectured at various levels in academic settings, and published articles online and in print. At KPMG in Malta, Rachel leads the ESG function. She leads ESG projects and supports various teams in developing and delivering ESG services to clients, including by providing technical input and specialist advice. She also conducts internal and external training on ESG, and acts as ESG champion for the firm. Rachel also forms part of KPMG’s global ESG specialist resources and is the Climate and Net Zero lead for a sub-region of KPMG across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Mercedes is a People and Change Manager and communications expert specialised in change management, with a strong focus on human-centric methodologies. With +7 years of experience in consulting cross several industries, Mercedes has experience interlocking with senior roles and key stakeholders, planning strategies, developing training and communication, and successfully managing projects’ timelines and teams to success.

Senior Manager

Faye is a Senior Manager in the tax function at KPMG in Malta. She joined KPMG in 2015 after graduating with a Masters in Accountancy from the University of Malta, with an overall distinction. Faye is part of the Income Tax Compliance, Domestic Tax Advisory and Incentive Legislation teams of KPMG. She has advised a number of large domestic companies and also international organisations in various industries. Faye has accumulated extensive knowledge and experience in relation to the compliance matters of local companies which benefit from incentives offered by the Maltese Government and the EU. She also assists in advising and assisting national and multinational clients with their tax compliance matters and their eligibility to benefit from incentives. Moreover, she has been involved in advising and providing assistance on financing structures and group restructuring, in particular in relation to the setting up of corporate structures in Malta. Faye is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants.

Curt joined KPMG in 2020 to continue driving forward the firm’s growth ambitions in the digital space. He is a dedicated and results-driven person with a successful background in the achievement of profitable business and growth through effective business management and the creation and execution of successful business strategies. His current focus is developing client relationships and becoming a strategic partner in their digital journey. He has been working in the tech industry in access of 25 years. Throughout his career he has been involved in a variety of projects in the private and public sectors. He assisted local and foreign organisations coming from different industries in gaining operational efficiencies and competitive advantage through the leveraging of tech. This involvement has exposed him to different technical and non-technical roles as well as vendors and technologies. Curt has extensive experience in working with leading vendors in the tech sector with the primary focus on delivering business solutions and value whilst exceeding expectations for customer service delivery. In the last few years Curt has been focused on assisting organisations on their digital transformation journeys specifically with adopting cloud and leveraging technologies, tools and methodologies to facilitate the transformation process and allow for faster return on investment. He also possesses the ability to establish sustainable and profitable relationships with customers, suppliers and stakeholders at various levels. He enjoys being part of, as well as leading, motivating and training, a successful and productive team, and thrives in highly pressurised and challenging working environments.

IT Advisory Lead

Robert is the IT Advisory Lead at KPMG Digital Solutions, actively delivering ICT Governance-related services. With roots in software development industry, gradually evolving into IT Management, he has held Chief Information Officer, Data Protection, and Information Security positions at several local and international Financial Services organisations.

Data & Analytics Lead

Marc is the Data & Analytics Lead at KPMG Malta. He has extensive experience handling and manipulating data in support of decision-making. With a focus on extracting value from data, he has a strong background in the use of analytics tools and techniques to generate insights. Marc has supported leadership in mapping, reviewing, and digitising systems of their insurance, manufacturing, banking, and tourism undertakings. The objective being that of improving planning and information flows in their respective businesses. Prior to his current role, Marc has worked extensively in a regulated environment, analysing and combining data from various sources in support of filings.

Senior Business Analyst

Alexia leads the automation team at KPMG Digital Solutions. She focuses mainly on business process improvement and the implementation of automated solutions using tools such as Blue Prism and Microsoft Power Platform. Alexia has lead projects within the BPR and Automation spectrum in various industries both locally and internationally.

Data Architect

Christopher joined the firm in 2022. Chris graduated from the University of Malta in Information Technology and also has finished a Masters degree in Software Engineering. Christopher has worked on several engagements with previous companies ranging in Telecoms, Banking and Gaming. His background has always been related to ETL development, Data analytics, Integrations and Regulatory reporting requirements.

Alessandro has accomplished, after graduating in Italy in Accounting and Commerce, a full time MBA (in presence, not online). Hebrings almost 30 years of experience, over four Continents, mainly in the CFO/Group Finance Director positions (also in stock exchange listed Groups). Business-wise, Alessandro has been working primarily in the energy sector (with a London FTSE listed company, with focus on oil and gas), automotive, food industry, automotive and high precision machinery. Beside spending time with his family, his hobbies are travelling, exercising (swimming, water polo, hiking), engineering and history.
